Generally speaking, the cylinders are rated at 10,000 PSI of Hydraulic
Fluid Pressure and start at 5 ton capacity and move on up to
over 1000 tons.
To lift greater loads they can be ganged together - Three
500 ton Rams will output 1500 tons of Force and so on.
Because of different needs several different styles of cylinders have evolved.

For simple Load Pushing or Lifting STANDARD SPRING RETURN or LOAD
RETURN Rams will do the job. As the names imply SPRING RETURN Rams have a spring (internally) that helps close the ram once the pressure is released. LOAD RETURN Rams require that either the Load be left on to close the ram or else some means of force will be needed to retract the ram (for instance, standing on it or pushing by hand).

Often a very large machine or load needing lifting will have a very low
clearance underneath it with which to work with. A Standard sized Ram
will not fit under the beast and a special LOW PROFILE or ULTRA LOW PROFILE
ram is required.

Sometimes it is necessary to lift a large load and leave it up for several
hours, days, weeks or even longer. Rather than leave the pump, hoses,
accessories and Rams themselves under pressure for so long a very simple
and quite clever holding screw collar has been built into LOCK NUT Rams. With
it the user is able to lift a load hydraulically then HOLD the load mechanically
with the LOCK NUT while the pressure is released, and perhaps the pump is
moved on to do other work.

Some jobs such as production Pressing require that a load be pressed
then the Ram be quickly retracted to remove the first item so the next item
can be set into the press to repeat the operation. Rather than wait for a
Spring Return Ram to do the job a DOUBLE ACTING RAM is used for speed of
operation. Here's how it works - The pump (equipped with a special valve to operate Double Acting Rams) switches the oil pressure from the bottom of the Ram to a port at the top of the Ram and it, more or less, throws the Ram into "Reverse" and quickly closes it.
Also, DOUBLE ACTING RAMS offer both PUSHING a load with pressure and PULLING a Load
with pressure. But because of the Laws of Physics one gets two DIFFERENT
pressure Forces when pushing or pulling.

As the name indicates, HOLLOW RAMS have a hole through the middle of them
through which threaded rods or steel cable can be passed to perform
heavy duty pulling operations. DOUBLE ACTING HOLLOW RAMS are also available for quickly releasing Force and repositioning.

ALUMINUM RAMS are becoming popular for their dramatic decrease in weight
versus Standard steel Rams. They are particularly nice if one has to carry
the Rams around the worksite a great deal and/or is constantly reposition
them. An important downside to ALUMINUM RAMS is that they don't handle Side Loads well - If you're Pushing or Lifting off center Loads stick with Steel!

SPREADER RAMS (also called Duckbills) are used somewhat like CrowBars
for getting into a very tight spot and nudging it open.
With their unique design they are able to slip into places that a normal Hydraulic Ram couldn't possibly fit, but with much less Force than conventional Rams - Usually 1/2 to 1 ton.
